Overcoming Procrastination This Tax Season
With the tax season upon us here in the US, I’ve talked to a lot of< marketers who are spending this weekend hard at work trying to get their taxes ready to send out by April 17th. (Don't believe me on this? Check out my article on saving money on taxes on my other blog.)Even though we got 2 extra days to file our taxes this year, here we are, almost on the original due date, and yet most marketers I’ve talked to have still not gotten their returns done. They’re planning on taking full advantage of those extra two days to the fullest.
That really got me to thinking:
Why do so many internet marketers simply procrastinate about EVERYTHING?
I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. In fact, I’ll even bet that you either know someone like this or that you may be like this yourself..
- Are you one of those people waiting until Monday to even start your taxes?
- Are you one of those people who has:
… Purchased every “How To” product out there?
… Taken every coaching course out there? And yet still have never done a single promotion or even tried to get more than 100 people on your list?
What causes so many internet marketers to procrastinate?
Most people wait to make a decision until they have all the information available… and they postpone important decisions because they do not have all the facts.
Well, guess what?
You’ll NEVER have all the facts.
These internet marketers simply have no framework for making important decisions. They don’t know how to weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and the ability to make decisions quickly.
The ability to make decisions quickly even when you do not have all the available facts is the hallmark of a true entrepeneur … and it’s a skill you MUST develop, if you want to succeed.
There are four types of thinking that will get in the way of your success. David Vallieres does a great job of describing them as follows:
- Comfy Food Thinking: —-”Comfort Foods” are all the rage… —-”Comfort Foods” are all the rage… why? Because they make you feel comfortable. But that kind of ‘thinking can be very bad for your business.
Not being able to move toward your goals because you’re ‘comfortable’ with what you already have… being ‘comfortable’ with your present situation is like signing your death certificate. You’ll never succeed if your too comfortable in your present situation.
- ’No Fear’ Factor Thinking: —-Fear is a great motivator - : —-Fear is a great motivator - knowing that you could be broke and destitute if you lost your job or your business stopped working should be enough motivation to keep you going for a long time but most people do not USE their fear… they think they have to ‘think positive’ and ‘everything will be ok’ - Bull.
You need to be afraid, very afraid and USE it to your advantage
- Amber Casing Thinking: —-The crap that gets built up in your : —-The crap that gets built up in your brain over the years- stuff you think is true is really not true and not being able to see clearly enough to know what’s the RIGHT thing to do at any one time will stop you cold. You need to THINK for yourself and stop letting others do your thinking for you.
How many ORIGINAL thoughts have you had this week? I mean REALLY ORIGINAL…?
- Distraction Disease Thinking: —-The world, your life, moves : —-The world, your life, moves fast… we do everything fast… go to work, take kids to the ball game, fix dinner, go to the movies, watch TV show (you’re fav), eat, walk…
We need to do these things BUT… they can be simply distractions … constant distractions to being able to focus on what you want.
So what SHOULD you do to avoid procrastination?
Take a minimum of 15-30 mins a day EVERYDAY to FOCUS on what YOU want and HOW to get it…
FOCUS on what you will do NEXT to get to your goal… on what you will do NEXT to get to your goal…
FOCUS on easy-to-do STEPS that will give you what you want.
Most people have Distraction Disease and their brains are fried from too much external stimulus.
You need to learn how to:
1) STOP,
2) THINK (really think, not just ‘pretend’ to think) and
3) PLAN.
Then COMMIT yourself to a course of ACTION!
This will help you to make the best decision possible, and make it quickly, even if you do not have all the facts. Most importantly, though, you need to then …
TAKE ACTION!
Now, in setting up that plan, you’ll want to use what is sometimes referred to as a “course correction” strategy. Tests and studies have shown repeatedly that even wrong decisions, if acted upon, can make you successful, when you implement this strategy.
“Course correction strategy” is simply the ability to be flexible after a decision is made and acted upon, but appears to be off target, so that you can get back on track by learning what went wrong, allowing you to correct your course of action as you move your business forward.
In other words, making a decision, then taking action is more important to your success than doing nothing becuase you’re waiting for all the facts.
It’s more important to make a flexible plan and TAKE ACTION, and later you can correct your actions as you go rather than postpone a decision and never act.
In taking action, your plan is very important. I recently read a report called “Ridiculous Income“ that shows you how to determine what to put in your plan to take action.
It comes with a great resource by Stephanie Woolford-Bales that walks you through, step-by-step, what you need to do to put a plan together, and then take action. The best part is that the entire package is less than $8 ! Get it now at:

With procrastination as a major character default, I was glad to see your post on “course correction” strategy. I suffered from “info overload”
to the extent that I could not take any action. It wasn’t untill I remembered a class I took in college that taught me how to manage time and work load that got me back to taking “action”.
A detailed plan, tho not so detailed that I get bogged down with the little things, helped me get back on track.
“…Any action, even tho it later is seen as the wrong one, is better than no action whatsoever…”
