Snobbiness=Sales?
I just got off the phone with Henry Gold. Over the past several months, Henry has really taken me under his wing to help me get better results in my business. (Thank you, Henry!)
If you’ve been on my list for awhile, or if you’ve been a reader of my other blog for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed the difference in my writing. This is all a result of Henry’s guidance.
Today, Henry’s advice really threw me for a loop.
Henry told me that I needed to be more snobby in my writing, both on my blogs, and in my emails. He says that until I can be more snobby, I’m setting myself up for fewer sales.
But if you know me at all, you’d know that I actually work VERY hard at being down to earth, being “just one of the guys”, and thus, NOT snobby.
Henry pointed out the writing of many of the internet’s top gurus …
… Terry Dean
… Mark Joyner
… Gary Halbert
… and many others
And told me that I really needed to study them. When I did, do you know what I saw? They ARE snobby! In fact, they are VERY snobby.
But I met Terry Dean at a recent conference (one of the greatest moments of my life, actually). And he is anything BUT a snob.
So, let me ask you this …
Do you really need to be a snob to have HUGE sales on the internet? Is it essential that you write in a snobby way in order to have a successful internet business?
I went searching on my hard drive for the Terry Dean books that I had studied when I had just gotten started on the internet.
Back then (and even now), Terry was actually one of the people who I consider a “mentor” to me. No, I had never talked to him. I had never even exchanged an email with him. But Terry’s teachings probably had more of an impact on my and on how I ran my business than any other person’s writings.
In looking at the early works of Terry Dean, he was very snobby. He was clearly good at what he did, and he knew it.
I started thinking that Henry was right … unless I could become more snobby in my writing, I was condemning myself to a lower level of monetary success than I had hoped for.
I decided to take a look at Terry’s current writings as well. That really surprised me!
You see, a few years back, Terry Dean had retired from the internet completely. He had achieved so much success in his business, that he no longer needed to work. But recently, he has made a comeback.
His current blog goes back only about 11 months. I decided that I should take a long look at those posts as well if I were to truly be able to answer this question.
I read at least 10 posts. In each, Terry comes across very authoritative; very confident. But something was different in every one of these posts. In fact, they didn’t even seem to be written by the same person that had written those earlier ebooks that I had just read.
The difference?
Terry was no longer completely snobby!
After really searching his blog thoroughly, I finally came across one post where Terry himself describes himself as “arrogant”. And it was that post, that helped me answer this question for myself.
In fact, in that post, Terry appeared to be struggling with the same issue that is now before me. And he asked himself, “Was my success because I was so smart…and wonderful?”
His answer was that he was successful because of both God and those around him. The balance of his blog post is then devoted to thanking all those who helped him to achieve his success.
Here’s what I learned from this investigation …
There are “5 Components To Building a Successful Sales Relationship Online”. They are:
1) Snobbiness sells. Sorry to tell you that, but it’s the truth. Just look at any of the great writers and/or gurus. At least in their writing, they ARE snobs.
2) You MUST be Thankful for what you have and what others have given to you. While you must have a snobby attitude in your writing, and in how you interact with your customers, you MUST also show your gratitude to those who have helped you along the way. That can be your family, your mentors, and even your customers. Make sure that you show your gratitude to those people and don’t just keep it to yourself!
3) Do not be rude while being snobby. My grandmother always used to say, “You get more bees with honey than with vinegar”. And that’s the truth too. While portraying an attitude of self confidence, you do not need to actively be mean or spiteful to anyone. Treat others the way that you would wish them to treat you.
4) Always remember to give to others first, before you expect to get anything in return. Even while you are being snobby, remember to GIVE. It may be a challenge, but it’s absolutely essential to your success!
5) Even though you may be a snob in your teaching, it does NOT mean that you have to be a snob in real life. This is perhaps the biggest lesson here. If you look at any of these great writers, and especially in the case of Terry Dean, while they may be snobs in their teaching and in their writing, they are FAR from snobs as people.
For some of us, being a snob does not come easily. In my case, my parents always taught me to NOT be arrogant.
To NOT be boastful.
To NOT be stuck up.
So am I condemning myself to a life of being poor because of it? Possibly.
I can’t imagine looking someone in the eye and telling them flat out, “No, I can’t help you unless you pay me $2,000 per hour.” My typical reaction would be, “Sure! I’d LOVE to help!”
But as my available time decreases as my business is growing, the simple truth is that my time is very valuable. Should I really be expected to give it away for free when I could spend it in other ways that would be more profitable?
There is a happy middle ground in there somewhere. It is a vey fine line, for sure, but one that can be mastered if you consider the five elements above.
You must work hard to develop a relationship with your subscribers, and turn them into customers. You must then work to expand that relationship with your customers and make them love you even more.
You do this things through writing on your blog and in your emails, by exuding self confidence and authority.
If you really want to make money online, this relationship must be developed from the very first moment that the people hear your name and see your products.
One of the best ways to introduce a large number of people to you quickly, is through JV Giveaways.
Over the next few weeks, there are around 10 of these events. If you were to participate in each of them, you could easily gain a list of thousands in literaly only a few weeks.
How much would having a few thousand subscribers on your list help you to make money online?
Well, probably not a whole lot if you develop a list of freebie seekers. What you want, is a responsive list of people who respect you, and who listen to your recoemmendations. The more you follow the 5 components above in your writing and in your actions, the more likely it is that you will be to achieve the success you desire.
For many newbie marketers, the biggest challenge to participating in these JV Giveaways, though, is not having a list. You see, it’s a bit of a catch-22.
Almost every giveaway requires you to promote to your list a certain number of times in order to keep your gift in the promotion. And, even if you have a list, if your list is not very responsive, that will also negatively affect your results as your gift will not be placed very high in the list. (I discuss both of these problems further in my other blog, in an article entitled “How Can You Participate In JV Giveaways With NO List?”)
In just a few days, I’m holding a two-part webinar/teleconference where I will teach you EXACTLY how you can do just that! You’ll find all the details at:
http://www.jvsuite.com/giveaway
Whether you are a newbie marketer who currently has no list and you’re wanting to find a way to participate in JV Giveaways, or you’re an expert marketer looking to increase your list building success with JV Giveaways, this 2–part webinar will help you to EXPLODE your list using JV Giveaways.
We’ll be showing you exactly how you can develop a strong relationship with your list from the start … beginning even before they download your gift in any JV Giveaway … through your blog and through article submission and syndication.
We’ve tried to foresee every possible obstacle that could keep you from building a gigantic, RESPONSIVE list using JV Giveaways, and provided you with the resources to overcome those obstacles:
- You don’t have a blog? Every participant will receive their very own WordPress blog, too! It’s completely customizable, totally personalizable, and all yours FREE when you join us for what we are calling “The Royal Secrets of JV Giveaway Success”.
- You don’t have a gift? Each ticket comes with several different products that we will teach you how to personalize and customize. You’ll have your very own product in no time! (Heck, we not only provide you with a gift, but possible one-time-offers too! Why not make a few bucks from your list building efforts, right?)
- The JV Giveaway hosts son’t allow you to give a gift without a list of a certain size? I’ve even made special arrangements with SEVERAL of the marketers hosting these giveaways. They have promised to allow ANYONE participating in this event (and following our step-by-step process) to join in their promotion.
As you learned in the 4th element of the “5 Components To Building a Successful Sales Relationship Online”, you must GIVE before you can expect to receive.
So why not get started in building the relationship with your subscribers and prospects by participating in a JV Giveaway? I’ll walk you through every step of the process when you join me on Wednesday night!

Hi Gina,
I don’t think it’s required that you be “snobby” to be success in your writing…although many successful people definitely are.
What you have to be is self-confident and willing to be controversial. Write your real opinions and don’t hold back because so-and-so won’t like it. If you’re not willing to offend in some way, you’re simply not going to be noticed.
Some will love you. Some will hate you. Make it difficult to simply ignore you. Start a few fights. Be vocal and opinionated instead of just going along with the flow. You’ll notice this trait about every successful person, although many are also snobby.

pps. Gina, I forgot to add what came to mind almost instantly after reading this blog post. It’s a biblical quote, “What profiteth a man if he gains the world but loses his soul?” If your highest goal is to make money, then be snobbish and cast your lot with those similar. If your highest goal is to be wise, then perhaps there is another way to be than snobbish.

Hi Gina,
Take it from someone whose blog is aptly named,
Sam Freedom’s Internet
Marketing Controversy Blog.
It is going to be so very important to make a clear distinction between the
snobbishness mentioned in your original post and the “controversy” referred
to by Terry Dean in the follow up comment.
I agree with Terry.
No heat; no cake. Friction can be both profitable, but most importantly it
has to be fun. The controversy has to take on an air of light cockiness but
an EMBRACING kind that Terry aptly describes as “confident” - not arrogant.
But arrogance is what I think of when I hear the word “snobby” or read some
of the names you mentioned in the original post.
Take a few minutes and read my “cocky” article where I refer to Gary
Ambrose’s “Picklemania” - we both know the guy could probably use a little
kick in the pants sometimes but, in 1994-ish, I learned, at a “Rainbow
Gathering”, that you don’t cut off your foot because it stinks….
…all these guys, snobby or not, have contributed something marvelous, and
of value, to the internet marketing community. It’s really all like one big
happy, growing family - even if it is a bit dysfunctional at times!
Cocky/Confident/Lightly Controversial - YES.
Snobby/Arrogant - NO.
Your friend,
Sam
ps. Good post! Good topic!;-)

Ahh, great post and comments, I’m enjoying myself!
My 2 cents:
When the student is ready, the teacher appears. The teacher may have
been there all the time - but her/ his revealed seeds of knowledge can
only grow once the soil is ready - until then it may well look like a stumbling stone…truth and value are results more than causes.
Snobby, cryptic nonsense?
Here’s what I mean:
You don’t even need to know Gina to stay far away from mistaking
her to be asking anyone to become arrogant or a snobby.
So the question that remains is whether Gina is (from my perspective)
wrong in really believing you have to write “snobby” to achieve you
goal (call it money for now) - or if she’s being the great teacher (that
she is) in creating the necessary verbal opposite to our minds out of
their dusty, small rooms of littleness and allow for a re-definition of
our voice.
Doesn’t the mind compare to a pendulum, in that the only way for it
to find it’s way from one unhealthy extreme to it’s own balanced middle,
the only chance it has is to first swing openly towards the other extreme?
It’s our choice. We’re the students in this instance. We’re choosing
whether we are facing a great teacher or just someone we disagree with.
This for a fact is true - unless I’m wrong
Happy day!
